How to Get Lucky

I’m switching things up.

I made this newsletter to also be a platform to share stories about inspirational people I’ve meet along the way. Today I am going to tell you about my friend: Robyn Smith

To give you a preview about Robyn. On my walk back after her and I got coffee, I called up the friend that intro-ed us and said “this girl is a beast, I love her” (she has a boyfriend, chill out).

What she did for me over that hour-plus coffee meeting was the wakeup call I needed. I spent 15 minutes learning about Robyn and she spent 60 listening to me, breaking down how I wanted to build a business but had no idea what to do and where to start. Little did I realize this was literally her job. She mentor’s entrepreneurs in residence at a holding company as a Chief of Staff.

This isn't supposed to be credential flaunting (she doesn’t even know I’m writing this). But I realized I got a 1 hour therapy + business coaching session. If you use Intro that would run you about $4k for a mid tier CEO. Robyn listened. She broke down my problem and helped me get a clear path on the next steps I was going to take in this business building journey.

Hard pass

It took me about 2 months of “soul searching” and “thinking” only to realize what she told me was six inches in front of my face and I needed to use the highest leverage tool I have.

The internet + my enthusiasm

“Post everywhere, any time, anything you’re thinking”

We’ve all been there:
“woah that sounds so cool, I’d love to try that”

Robyn is really really good at getting peoples attention on the internet. Over the past 3 month’s she’s gone viral on twitter on average every other week. I keep asking her for the sauce and she’s gate keeping it. Guess I’ll have to learn on my own…

(👆🏻check the view count on these👆🏻)

I told her I don’t mind attention but I struggle to put video content out. She called me an idiot (indirectly) because I was neglecting my biggest strength. The best way to communicate my enthusiasm is through video content and I was being a little wus about putting myself out there on the internet. Especially since video content is the most pushed form of content on all platforms (no surprise there).

“All you’re doing is sharing your thoughts, and expanding your surface area for luck”

I struggled with the concept of sharing videos of myself for a while because of some internal debates I had about being called an “influencer.” It feels weird at first. Influencer is typically associated with 19 year old girls with double D’s getting millions of views because they did a dance in front of a camera. If I post a shirtless pic on the internet I just get a lot of guys in my DMs, zero messages from girls. But neither are my intent for posting.

Looks like micro-dosing creatine for 3 months is working 💪🏻

My intent is shifting as we speak. Social media used to be currency for most people.

Meet a person you like: look them up on instagram, see how they look in their posts

Stumble across a rich guy at a networking event: you look them up on linkedin

1.5 years ago I started posting on twitter and writing this blog because I wanted to learn how to tell stories and build an audience. 4 Months ago I had to leave Dexcom so i could be more vocal about health. Now it’s time to use these platforms to build that reputation.

It’s not a secret. Even the head of YC is telling founders to learn how to post on TikTok. Everyone needs to learn how to create content. With AI now making in easy to build software the only three things that are going to protect a business are

  • Brand

  • Network Effects

  • The Ability to Capture Attention

(sorry for being the crusty old man)

If you’re able to get 1 of those your good. If you have all 3, you’re set. If you want to build a business today I believe being able to capture and keep attention is going to be one of the most valuable skills. Whether you like it or not your going to have to find a way to get in front of your customers. You can either doing that by handing Zuck millions of dollars, or build an audience.

I’m gunna start with option 2. Build an audience. People will take notice. You’ll slowly expand your surface area for luck.

  • Noah Kahn did it on TikTok

  • Kim Kardashian did it (unintentionally, then intentionally)

  • (father) Andrew Huberman did it with science and education

It seems cringe at first, until it doesn’t. It feels good to create. Create more than you consume. Put it out on the internet, do it again, and again, and again.

Increase your chances to get lucky. Thanks Robyn for the wakeup call.

You’re Awesome,

Jared

Gentlemen’s Agreement 🤝🏻

I need a favor from you. Every week I spend several hours crafting this email to give you entirely for free. Banger, after banger. Except it’s not actually free.

I love doing this, but I also love seeing this grow (You might say I’m flawed. But you’re not my therapist). To keep this free it would mean the world to me, and my ego, if you shared this with just 1 person who you think would also like this.
